The Knit Muir Throw Blanket is a reflection of nature to me. The peaks and transitions of color are reminiscent to me of walks through a forest or the layers of mountains and hillsides. Named after John Muir and his quote: “And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” 

I used Lion Brand Mandala Ombre yarn for this project. I absolutely loved working with this yarn. It’s soft and the color transitions were really enjoyable to watch flow.

Final Dimensions: 52” wide x 57” long (132 cm x 145 cm) – blanket will relax with use, so you will find that you gain some inches. 

Gauge: 16 sts x19 rows in a 4 in x 4in (10 cm x 10 cm) in pattern swatch

• Needle Size: US 9/5.5mm 40” Circular Needles

• Yarn:  6 Skeins (2,065 yards / 1,890 m) Lion Brand Mandala Ombre in the color “Cool” - or any worsted weight yarn

Stitch Abbreviations

• CO – Cast On
• K – Knit
• P – Purl
• Wyif – With yarn in front

Inspiration

While I was creating this blanket, I was trying to figure out a name. As I was sitting there knitting on this, suddenly a quote came to mind by John Muir…

And so, I named this the Muir Blanket. Enjoy.

Pattern

CO 225 sts

Bottom edge:

Row 1: *K1, P1* repeat to end.

Row 2: *P1, K1* repeat to end.

Repeat these two rows until your bottom edge measures 1 inch (2.5 cm)

Main body pattern:

Rows 1 and 3: K5, *P5, K1* repeat until 10 sts remain. P5, K5.

Row 2: K5, *Wyif slip 5, K1* repeat until 10 sts remain. Wyif slip 5, K5.

Row 4: K5, *K2, Place your right hand needle under the long bar from Row 2 and knit together that bar and the next stitch, K3* repeat until 10 sts remain.  K2, Place your right hand needle under the long bar from Row 2 and knit together that bar and the next stitch, K7. *Note: please see the stitch tutorial if you need help with this special stitch*.

Repeat Rows 1 – 4 until your blanket measures 56” long (142 cm)

Repeat Row 1 one more time.

Top edge: Repeat rows from your bottom edge, creating a 1×1 ribbed edge for 1 inch (2.5cm). When finished, bind off.
